The American phenomenon of Black Friday has truly taken over north of the border, and yes, that means here in North Bay too.

This morning North Bayites got into the shopping action as dozens of excited shoppers lined up outside Northgate Shopping Centre waiting for the door crashing sales to begin.

Jordanna Grant, Northgate Shopping Centre’s Marketing Director, says Black Friday is growing in popularity in Canada and it doesn't look like that will change anytime soon.

“Traditionally a lot of Canadians would take their Black Friday shopping across the border but many are keeping it local with the decline of the Canadian dollar,” notes Grant.

Grant believes Black Friday popularity is taking some of the novelty away from Boxing Day.

"Also, many are choosing to do their Christmas shopping on Black Friday which is why it seems gaining popularity over Boxing Day.  Gift and gift card purchases are big on Black Friday and on Boxing Day people tend to shop for themselves.”

Walmart and Best Buy were some of the key locations with big savings on electronics that gathered shoppers.

“It has been very busy here today,” she said about Black Friday which was likely even busier with the fact that it was also a Snow Day for school kids in the area.

“We have a great gift card promo running- purchase a $50 Northgate gift card and get a $10 gift card for free (with a max of $50 in free gift cards per person).  We are also open extra late this evening and have lots of prizes and freebies to give away so I'm certain it will be busy until we close at 11 p.m.”

Local retailers around the city are offering Black Friday deals throughout the weekend at places like Leon’s Furniture, Rona, and McQueen’s Furniture.
