A Kyle McDonald shootout goal in the fifth round proved to be the difference as the North Bay Battalion defeated the rival Sudbury Wolves 2-1.

“To be honest, it’s always tough to come into this building and get two points,” explained head coach Ryan Oulahen. “So we’re happy with that.

“They’re a really good hockey team, and I don’t think people realize how good they are. I know they had a tough start to the season, and they have a lot of talent on that side. It’s a divisional opponent, games against Sudbury is always tight.”

After some back-and-forth action to start the game, Justin Ertel (13) capitalized on a turn over to best new Wolves netminder Kevyn Brassard shorthanded.

However, a few moments later, Kocha Delic (12) put the puck past Dom DiVincentiis to tie the game at 1-1.

Those two goals proved to be all that was scored in regulation. In total, DiVincentiis made 26 saves, while Brassard made 27 in a goaltender duel.

“That was the biggest story of the night with the goaltenders,” Oulahen stated.

“Especially in overtime, the game could have been over both ways but they found ways to stop the puck. Brassard was good, and so was DiVincentiis.”

In the shootout, Ty Nelson and McDonald scored for North Bay, while Alex Pharand netted the lone goal for Sudbury.

The Troops will be back in action Thursday when they host the Soo Greyhounds.

“We have to get some rest, it’s a quick turnaround,” Oulahen said. “Rest, recover, use the day wisely and come out with a good start at home.”
