The Town of Mattawa has given the Mattawa Museum a big boost, in the form of a $15,000 grant to help offset the museum’s 2022 operating costs. Specifically, the funds go toward administrative and staffing costs.

The museum is run by the Historical Society Board, a volunteer, non-profit organization that formed in 1976. Its purpose is to preserve local artifacts and educate people about Mattawa’s rich history. The museum accomplishes both and members of the Society create and maintain the exhibits within and offer tours to those wanting to step into the past.

In March of 2011, the Historical Society Board made a request to municipal council for financial assistance to help the society achieve its goals. Council agreed, and every year it contributes to the cause, and this year the amount is $15,000.

Councillor Laura Ross noted in a memo that Council members also “strongly encourage the Board to seek other sources of revenue” from other levels of government to help keep the coffers full. This could also include money from “other area municipalities who are also part of the history on display at the Museum.”

“We all want to see the museum succeed,” said councillor Dexture Sarrazin.
