The North Bay Police Service is advising the public that there have been reports of a bear sighting in the area of Harris Drive and West Ferris Secondary School.

The North Bay Police Service will be working with the Ministry of Natural Resources to investigate says a news release.

"Members of the public should practice caution and be aware of their surroundings in the area,"

If there is an immediate threat call 9-1-1.

Bears typically stop hibernating early due to a variety of reasons, including:

  • Climate change: Warmer temperatures can cause bears to awaken earlier from hibernation and we have had above-normal temperatures.
  • Food availability: If food sources become available earlier in the year, bears may come out of hibernation early.
  • Disturbance: Human activity, such as hunting, logging, or hiking, can disrupt a bear's hibernation and cause it to awaken.

Bears are not strictly bound to a specific timeline for hibernation and may come out of hibernation earlier or later depending on the specific conditions in their environment.
