BAYSAR releases results of Let's see you wear your PFD survey

BAYSAR Search & Rescue conducted their “Let’s see you wear your PFD” survey on Saturday.

BAYSAR Search & Rescue conducted their “Let’s see you wear your PFD” survey on Saturday.

They report a slight increase in people wearing their lifejackets compared to results of last year’s survey in similar weather conditions.

The survey was organized with the support of North Bay OPP and the North Bay Police to bring public awareness to the dangers of boating without a lifejacket.

“In 2013, BAYSAR conducted the same campaign on June 30th, a calm day, and on July 1st, a windy day,” said Stan French of BAYSAR Search & Rescue.

“This year’s comparison with last year's totals was only made with the day that had similar weather conditions. It was obvious from last year's survey that the number of people who wear their PFDs increases when the waves get higher."

In 2013, the rates for open boats went up from 9% on a calm day to 21% on a rough day.

Lakes in the survey included Nipissing, Trout, Turtle, Talon, and Nosbonsing.
