Battalion sign 2018 draft pick

The Battalion have signed 2018 fifth-rounder James Mayotte, the club announced on Wednesday.  

Mayotte, played at the high profile hockey prep school Shattuck-St. Mary's, which is located in Fairbault, Minnesota.  Some of the high profile alum from that prep school include Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, and Zach Parise. 

North Bay native and former Battalion first-rounder Brady Lyle also went to the prep school.  

Mayotte, a left-shot rearguard who has played the last two years at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, a prep school in Faribault, Minn., was a fifth-round pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He turned 17 on March 4.

The six-foot-two, 185-pound resident of Mallorytown, Ont., played 55 games with the Sabres midgets last season, scoring eight goals and earning 12 assists for 20 points. He also played 19 games for the school’s under-18 entry in the North American Prep Hockey League, scoring one goal and adding four assists for five points.

Mayotte is to report to a Battalion training camp in August, and the club figures to have four holdover defencemen, in overager Nick King, Braden Henderson, Simon Rose and Pacey Schlueting, North Bay’s first-round pick in 2018.

The Battalion selected Czech defenceman Martin Hugo Has in the first round of the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft in June. A right shot who stands six-foot-four and weighs 192 pounds, he was the 22nd pick in the two-round process.

From last year's defence, Theo Calvas has aged out while David Maier and Zack Malik will not be back, Maier was actually selected in the first round of the CHL Import Draft by the Peterborough Petes.  Travis Mailhot, who suffered through injuries during his two seasons with the Troops has retired from junior hockey. 

The Battalion signed three skaters to standard player’s agreements at its May orientation camp, in centre Liam Arnsby, defenceman Paul Christopoulos and right-winger Alex Christopoulos.
