Attempted Murder under investigation

A British Columbia man faces a number of charges including attempted murder in relation to an incident early Saturday morning in Kirkland Lake.

KIRKLAND LAKE, ON - A British Columbia man faces a number of charges including attempted murder in relation to an incident early Saturday morning in Kirkland Lake.  

Members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for assistance at a hotel located on Government Road East in the Town of Kirkland Lake on July 15th at approximately 1:15 a.m. involving a physical altercation.

Assisting in the investigation were OPP Crime Unit members from Kirkland Lake, South Porcupine, Kapuskasing and Almaguin Highlands Detachments. Also assisting were Forensic Identification Services (FIS) from North Bay and South Porcupine, the North East Region (NER) Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the OPP Canine Unit from Kirkland Lake.

A 39-year-old male sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Kirkland and District Hospital for medical care.

Byron Cheesequay, age 29, of Qualicum Beach, British Columbia has been charged with Attempt to Commit Murder, Forcible Confinement, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Fail to Comply with Probation Order. Cheesequay was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing.
