Area resident angry over snow piles on area road allowances

'Law-abiding taxpayers should not have to pay higher taxes to foot the bill for snow removal for people who do not want to remove their snow and stopping access to these lakes'

Stewart Miller has been living in the North Bay area for 30 years.

This winter he has noticed a snow problem that has really caught his attention.

"The city has plenty of bylaws in place, the province, about depositing snow on any road allowance anywhere," said Miller.

He's referring to the Highway Traffic Act, section 181 which states "No person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway without permission in writing so to from the Ministry or road authority responsible for maintenance of the road."

Miller believes this rule is being broken all the time in the city.

"This is a city that used to be a big snowmobile area, people used to access the lake all the time with snowmobiles," said Miller.

"Well, they are not doing it because those accesses are blocked by the residents that own houses on either side of the road allowance are depositing their snow with the city's knowledge and permission, onto the road allowances."

Miller believes snow removal crews within the city are aware of it.

"The same supervisors see these people dump it on city property, road allowances, everywhere and they do nothing about it and that's wrong," said Miller.

"Law-abiding taxpayers should not have to pay higher taxes to foot the bill for snow removal for people who do not want to remove their snow and stopping access to these lakes for ATV riders, sledders, cross country snowshoeing, walkers and people with disabilities can't get over 20-foot snowbanks because people think they are entitled and have privilege because they live on the lake."

He believes that banks should not be there.

"The city should get all those road accesses open, all of them open," he said.
