Area businesses spotlighted at Royal Agricultural Winter Fair

Dozens of northern Ontario businesses will get their opportunity to shine at the 2018 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair next month.

More than 50 agricultural and equine businesses, and organizations from across northern Ontario will showcase their products and services during the 10-day event which will be held November 2-11 at the Enercare Centre in Toronto.

Included are a number of businesses from North Bay and surrounding area.

The Fair attracts over 300,000 visitors each year. 

Local exhibitors include:

Greenfoot: North Bay's Greenfoot markets chaga , a medicinal mushroom harvested in Canada's northern forests. Through its relationship with members of the research community, Greenfoot has developed a chaga extract, an antioxidant believed to cure stomach and skin problems, and contribute to a long and robust life. This year, Greenfoot will continue to market its Raspberry-Sumac Tea.

Northern Ontario Brewers Alliance: Northern Ontario Brewers Alliance is a collection of six Northern Ontario craft brewers who share a common vision of high-quality beer, collaboration and support of Northern communities, and have come together to offer something unique across the province. Six hand-picked, hand-crafted Northern Ontario beers from six different brewers will be featured. Northern brewers include Highlander Brew Company, Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, Manitoulin Brewing Company, New Ontario Brewing Company, Sleeping Giant Brewing Company, and Stack Brewing Company.

CJ Pies 'n' More in Warren: It's is a popular retail and wholesale bakery serving North Bay, Sudbury, and other communities throughout Ontario. Its pastries include maple and sticky buns, butter tarts, mini buttercream pastries, genois slabs, and English-style fruit loaves. It also offers savoury meat pies, such as tourtière, chicken, turkey, steak & kidney, and venison, as well as meatballs, homemade soups, and chili. Owners Jerry and Colleen Pronk will also be selling their own line of seasonings, flavoured oils, rubs, and BBQ sauces, each specifically developed for pork, beef, chicken, turkey or venison.

Quinta Quinoa: North Bay's Quinta Quinoa produces a unique, locally grown, North American variety of quinoa seed which is high in protein, zinc, and fibre, and an excellent source of iron, magnesium and calcium. Based in the North, the company’s quality quinoa is fully traceable back to the Canadian producer.  Ongoing agronomy research on Ontario soils is continuing to provide Quinta Quinoa with insight on best farming practices for highest yield and quality of quinoa seed. Quinta Quinoa is the first Ontario grown quinoa seed on the market.

BeeBAGZ in Huntsville. The product that will be featured at the Northern Ontario Pavilion is BeeBAGZ, a waterproof, self-sealing, reusable storage bag made from 100% cotton, beeswax, jojoba oil, and resin. Available in small, medium and large sizes, they can last for at least a year and their use could potentially eliminate thousands of single-use plastic bags from ending up in landfills and waterways.

Sherry’s Gourmet Preserves South River: Sherry Leverdingen has developed a line of homemade chocolate-covered tasty treats that includes chocolate bacon, chocolate potato chips, chocolate licorice, and chocolate pretzels. As Manager of the Huntsville and South River Farmers Markets, Sherry will also bring a variety of preserves ranging from jams and jellies to pickles and vinaigrettes to the table. Most products are sold in gingerbread jars.

The Frying Dutchman Co.: Huntsville company offers a unique line of food products which are all vegan-based. Lyanna Zylstra started her vegan foods while operating a type of chip truck in the area and has now expanded into manufacturing. She will be offering a variety of products including baked goods and fruit dishes. Lyanna is known as an expert in her field and is often called upon to speak about the sector.

Morgan House Wool Works Studio: With wool from her sheep, Pam Cornochan of Morgan House Wood Works Studio in Huntsville creates unique landscapes using felting techniques. She shears the sheep, dyes the wool and then creates artwork known as Watercolour with Wool. She has been showing her work in several shows and galleries in the Huntsville and Maynooth areas. Raised in Huron County, Pam has also been teaching her craft in Algonquin Park, area schools, the McMichael Art Gallery in Kleinburg, and in her barn studio over the past 11 years.

FedNor is providing $526,800 and with a development company called Economic Partners is supporting the Northern Ontario Agri-food Pavilion, a prime marketplace that will highlight more than 50 exhibitors from across the region at Canada’s largest indoor agricultural exposition.

Established in 1922, the Royal features more than one million square feet of displays and competition facilities. The Northern Ontario Agri-food Pavilion is the largest exhibit at the fair and provides participants from across the North with opportunities to establish new business contacts and increase sales.
