Elderly man dies in Front St. house fire

'When we pulled him out of the house there were no vital signs'

Firefighters pulled a man with 'vital signs absent' from a house fire at 594 Front St. this evening.

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley, at the scene, told BayToday that the call came in at 9:17 p.m.

"On arrival, we had smoke showing from the building. Crews began an interior attack and search and rescue immediately found a victim inside the house. We removed the victim, whose vital signs were absent, so fire crews began resuscitation efforts with the EMS crews."

The victim was rushed to hospital,

"When we pulled him out of the house there were no vital signs. EMS and firefighters worked together to get the man to hospital. I do not have a status update of the patient," stated Whiteley.

"We are now just into our overhaul phase so we're still looking for hotspots. It got into the walls and up into the attic space. We backed up a little bit while hydro eliminated all power sources and we're going back in just to make sure all hotspots are out." Fire Prevention was on scene and the Ontario Fire Marshall has been notified and investigation will begin later.

Damage to house and contents is pegged at $250,000.
