American astronaut, NASA pioneer and American senator John Glenn died at the age of 95, while in hospital at the Ohio State University medical centre in Columbus.

Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth when he made the historic flight on Feb. 20, 1962.

He is the last surviving astronaut from NASA's early Mercury missions.

Glenn made history a second time when he became the oldest person to fly in space, when he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998.

He also served a long political career, and was first elected to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate in 1974.
