When an alarm was sounded at 10:46 this morning fire crews quickly responded to a working fire at the Atlas Copco facility at 125 Ferris Drive in the south end of the city.

"The alarm system worked properly alarming on-scene personnel of the danger so that they could safely evacuate the building," said Deputy Fire Chief  Greg Saunders.

"Early notification of the fire meant that the fire department could be quickly activated. This timely notification means that firefighters arrive on-scene early enough to suppress and mitigate the damaging effects of the fire."

The cause of the fire was a mechanical failure associated with the welding unit.  Damage is estimated at $50,000.

According to its website, Atlas Copco Canada has leading positions in sales, service and marketing of air and gas compressors, portable compressors, generators, mining and rock excavation equipment, construction tools, pneumatic and electric power tools and assembly systems.
