The Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council (GNSC), will once again be running its Adopt A Sturgeon program, over a period of 8 days between May 11th and June 4th. This year’s program will take place at Chapman’s Chutes on the South River.
For a donation of $100, individuals or groups are provided with the opportunity to observe the netting and tagging operation. Adopters receive a certificate with a photo of them holding their fish, along with biological information and tag number. When recaptured in subsequent assessments, participants receive an update on their fish.
The Adopt a Sturgeon program runs in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources ongoing assessment program that assesses the health of the adult sturgeon population by gathering data on the age, size, sex and numbers of spawning fish.
“These donations support our ongoing efforts to raise the public’s awareness about this fascinating and mysterious fish”, stated Council Chair, John Thornton.
Interested participants are asked to contact the Council at
[email protected] or (705) 753-2980 for more information.
The GNSC is a charitable organization that partners with similar-minded groups and government agencies to implement environmental programs; provide information on conservation and sustainability; and to increase awareness of the ecosystem.
