Let’s Remember Adam – Stop for the School Bus!
Road Safety Achievement for The Mattawa Group of Four

(Mattawa, On) - Mattawa OPP hosted its bi-monthly Police Services Board meeting this evening at the detachment. The Mattawa Group of Four Police Services Board (PSB) meeting was highlighted with a special presentation for Road Safety Achievement.

The PSB was instrumental in introducing a school bus campaign in memory of five-year-old Adam Ranger, who lost his life while crossing a road after disembarking from a school bus in February 2000.

The campaign was launched on Thursday Oct. 14, 2004 at a Bus Patrollers Training session at the East Ferris Community Center & Arena. A window poster (decal) was supplied for local bus lines for the rear windows of the bus with Adam Ranger’s picture and the slogan “Let’s Remember Adam – STOP FOR THE SCHOOL BUS!”

The decal is a constant reminder for motorists reminding them of the importance of obeying the flashing lights on a school bus.

Since last October, the endorsement of “Let’s Remember Adam” has taken a life of its own. Recently the Nipissing/East Parry Sound Partners in Trauma Prevention received $10,000.00 from the Insurance Bureau of Canada to bring the campaign to North Bay.

In March of 2005, Adam’s parents, Deb and Dave Ranger attended a Ministry of Transportation award ceremony in London Ontario. They accepted an award for Road Safety Achievement, in the category of Achievement in Road User Safety-Innovation, on behalf of the campaign. Deb and Dave also received a monitory award of $500.

This was donated to the Nipissing/East Parry Sound Partners in Trauma Prevention. This money along with the endorsement from the Insurance Bureau of Canada, will go towards North Bay school bus fleets receiving decals for their buses.

Today, Adam’s parents presented the Road Safety Achievement award to the Mattawa Group of Four PSB. The following PSB Members graciously accepted this award:

Mr. Dean Backer – Chairman
Ms. Mary Lou Rainville
Mr. Jacques Amyotte
Mr. Jeff Latimer
Mr. Jim Latendresse

The expansion of this program is important to the Mattawa Group of Four, as it will serve to increase awareness of the risks and consequences to motorists who fail to stop for a school bus.

Staff Sgt. Rob McDonald (Detachment Commander for the North Bay OPP Cluster) who was in attendance during this special presentation explains, “The ultimate penalty of taking away the life of an innocent child while failing to stop for a school bus is taking away our future leaders.”
