A sugar maple tree was planted outside of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23 today to celebrate Arbour Day and to kick off this year’s Communities in Bloom campaign.
It also honors the war veterans who fought and died. The federal government has declared 2005 the Year of the Veteran, a year-long tribute to veterans.
Mayor Vic Fedeli was on hand to spread some soil over the new addition to Memorial Park.
“It all tied in perfect today,” said Fedeli.
“We couldn’t have picked a better day to do this.”
Hal Falk, the owner of Eagle Tree and Landscaping Services, Nursery, donated the tree.
“We will be planting some more trees in different locations around town,” Falk said.
Communities in Bloom will be working hard with local businesses and citizens in order to beautify the city.
“It is important for our city to look good,” said CIB chairwoman Lonita Reed.
“It’s good to have a nice looking community, it’s good for tourism and it’s nice for the people who live in the community.”
This will be the fifth season that the Communities in Bloom committee has been active in North Bay and the third year that North Bay has held Arbour Day.
Communities in Bloom will be holding a garbage pick-up day on May 14 at 10 a.m, sponsored by Tim Horton’s. After that CIB volunteers will be picking up garbage every Wednesday night at six p.m. at what they call “hot spots.”
