There is a shortage of drivers.

Some drivers still aren't getting the message about school bus safety, and it shows as a two-week back-to-school safety initiative saw 72 charges laid under the Highway Traffic Act.

One person was arrested for impaired driving by the North Bay Police.

Enhanced traffic safety patrols were placed along bus routes and Community Safety Zones. The campaign started on Tuesday, September 7 and ran until Friday, September 17.

Police say they worked closely with local school bus companies and drivers to identify areas in the city where drivers were violating traffic laws.

Of the 72 charges, there were:

  • 65 incidents of speeding
  • Three incidents of "Disobey School Bus Stop Arm"
  • Two incidents of driving while under suspension
  • One disobey a lane light
  • One disobey stop sign

Also during the campaign, on September 15 at 3 p.m. police arrested a 50-year old man from North Bay on Algonquin Avenue and charged him with:

  • Operation while impaired
  • Change lane – not in safety
  • Fail to surrender insurance card
