The twelve-member 22 Wing Nijmegen Team from CFB North Bay departed for the Four Day Nijmegen Marches in the Netherlands on Wednesday.

After preparing for the 160 km march since late March, the team members are prepared for the physical and mental demands of the marches.

“We have prepared for the Nijmegen Marches by marching three times a week for the last 3 months while carrying a rucksack with 10kg of dry weight,”  explained Major Darren Reck, Team Leader in a release.

“Typically, team members march more than 790 km's in preparation for the Nijmegen Marches.  The team is very excited to participate in this experience.”

Henrik Smith, 22 Wing Commander says the team has worked hard to get ready for this historic march.

“The wing is extremely proud of their motivation and determination and wishes them Godspeed on their journey in the Netherlands,” stated Colonel Henrik Smith.

The 22 Wing is one of fourteen Canadian Armed Forces teams and one of only two Royal Canadian Air Force teams chosen to participate in the Nijmegen Marches.

The Nijmegen Marches are physically and emotionally demanding as demonstrated by the completion of 160 km of marching spread over four days.

It is described as an excellent fitness activity and endurance test that builds esprit de corps and reinforces core military values, reflecting the physical fitness of CAF members.

The CFB North Bay team will return to Canada on Monday, July 24th after some rest and relaxation.
