Twenty three military members from 22 Wing/CFB North Bay trained this week to prepare for their role as the 22 Wing Auxiliary Security Force (WASF). This training prepared them for the Wing’s upcoming Exercise Determined Dragon later this month.

The students were taught how to search vehicles, people and buildings; how to secure areas by cordoning them off, rules of engagement, the limitations on the use of force, how to respond as a member of the Quick Reaction Force, the legal status of security guards, media awareness training and responsibilities of peace officers.

“This is the fourth year that I have been the WASF Commander. The value of this training continues to take on more meaning and importance to the mission here at 22 Wing as the main level of effort of the Canadian Forces shifts from combat operations in Afghanistan to training and to a more domestic focus such as national sovereignty and Arctic Operations,” said Captain Don Davis.

The role of WASF is activated when required to provide support to the Wing Security Force (WSF). The WSF consists of the 22 Military Police Flight and Commissionaires. Members of WASF are designed to augment the WSF by providing a trained force to meet increased manpower demands generated by other-than-normal operations. These additional operations could include; disaster or emergency, control of movement onto and within the Wing, establishing access control cordons around a designated area or activity, protection of resources essential to mission accomplishment and assistance in bomb threat incidents on the Wing.

Each Wing Commander is responsible for organizing, manning, equipping and training the WASF.
