The worldwide craze of Pokemon Go has the Canadian Military warning players to stay off its property.

The Department of National Defense says military police have responded to a number of incidents including the base here in North Bay.

Colonel Henrik Smith, Commander of 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base North Bay told BayToday that "22 Wing personnel who want to play Pokémon Go are strongly encouraged to do so safely and respect all applicable rules, regulations and laws.

"For security reasons, only individuals  who have official business, or are visiting or using one of the Wing’s publicly accessible facilities, such as the gym or museum, should be on the base. All others will be asked to leave by members of the 22 Military Police Flight who will employ their discretion."

Failure to do so could result in a warning, citation and fine, or arrest.

The game is played on smart phones and collectible characters called Pokemon appear on-screen for players to capture.

It uses a GPS function which means players have to journey outside to play. Groups are often seen playing at North Bay's waterfront.

"To date, 90% or more of the Pokémon GO traffic has been at the Air Defence Park on Airport Rd, which is not an issue as it is on City of North Bay property," said Smith. "The Poke-Stop at Building 33, which also  houses the Canadian Forces Museum of Aerospace Defence,  is on the base and MPs will ask any individuals who are not actually visiting the museum to leave."

22 Wing North Bay is responsible for providing surveillance, identification, control and warning for the aerospace defence of Canada and North America at the Sector Air Operations Centre, says its website.

About 200,000 flights per year are tracked.
