175 charges for speeding in North Bay area last week

On Monday, members of the North Bay OPP wrapped up their participation in the Canada Road Safety Week. 

The campaign focused on the high risk behaviours known as the "Big Four" which include impaired, aggressive and inattentive driving as well as the lack of seatbelt use. 

Officers were also looking for Liquor Licence Act offences. 

As a result numerous vehicle and vessel stops conducted by officers, the following Provincial Offence Notices were issued in the North Bay detachment area:

  •  2 warn range suspensions
  • 175 charges for speeding
  • 3 charges of street racing
  • 3 seatbelt charges
  • 2 distracted driving charges
  • 12 LLA charges

Most of the LLA charges stemmed from vessel and vehicle stops where occupants were charged with having liquor in an open container in other than licenced premises, residence, or private place. 

Staff Sergeant Chris Summersby, Detachment Commander of the North Bay OPP, reminds motorists, "The OPP remains committed to enforcing impaired driving laws and liquor offences and educating road users about the dangers posed by motorists who drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Consuming alcohol and/or drugs while driving any vehicle, ATV, or boat is also an offence. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan to not drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or public transit, stay overnight or stay home."

Meanwhile, West Parry Sound OPP reported:

  • 3 impaired driving charges
  • 2 - 90 day drivers licence suspensions
  • 4 fail to yield charges
  • 2 careless driving charges
  • 1 distracted driving charge
  • 55 charges for speeding
  • 1 seatbelt charges
  • 1 prohibited driving charge
