The Canadian flag

To the editor:

As we approach “Canada Day” over the July 1st weekend, one must think about the stealing, or the usurping of a vital symbol of our country, our Canadian flag, by the truckers' groups who have dared to fly it, as their symbol over many months.   They have used it indiscriminately, wildly,  and with no hesitation. They do this supposedly to champion their illegal cause of blocking public roads etc. to support their alleged right to avoid certain properly passed laws. That is not at all what our flag represents.

It is such an objectionable purloining! The Canadian flag represents and has represented our country, our nation,  –  very well, for many decades. It should not be employed as a symbol of some cause, of a small group, whether a good one, as the truckers attest or a futile one – as most onlookers and sufferers can well affirm.

Don't you just feel terribly sometimes - about thinking about tearing it down from their vehicle or even a home area - though it is our symbol of  Canadian unity and strength. You feel this because it has been taken away - as their symbol. Whether you agree with their cause, or not, our Canadian flag should not be used to represent any individual group.

It is our national symbol!

Let us hope that our holiday weekend can proceed without our important flag being demeaned further by the trucker group. We will see their understanding of their flouting of that important symbolism when and if they decamp flagless, upon Ottawa again, on July 1.
