Dear Editor,
In these turbulent times, the importance of the presence and voice of local journalism has never been more evident.
Recent events, such as Premier Ford's reversal of his ill-advised plan to convert the Greenbelt into an unsustainable housing development project, underscore just how crucial local journalists are in holding those in power accountable and safeguarding our democracy.
The Greenbelt issue serves as a prime example of the pivotal role played by local journalism. Without the diligent reporting and investigation carried out by local journalists, it is doubtful that Premier Ford and his advisers would have changed course. This demonstrates that the Fourth Estate remains an essential pillar of our democracy, ensuring that the voices of the majority are heard and heeded.
It is disheartening to witness the unwarranted attacks on local journalists by a minority who distrust the media regardless of what is printed. However, it is vital to remember that the majority of our society still relies on local journalists to provide honest and factual news. These dedicated professionals are the watchdogs who shine a light on issues that affect our daily lives, and they are the bridge between the government and the governed. Surprise, it is not the internet and social chat rooms!
As citizens, we have the power to shape the direction of our society through our votes, but this power can only be effectively exercised when we are well-informed. Local journalism plays a pivotal role in ensuring that we have the unbiased information we need to make informed decisions at the ballot box.
So, let us take a moment to express our gratitude to all the local journalists who work tirelessly to report on our local news. They are the unsung heroes who help us navigate the complexities of our world, and they are instrumental in preserving the health of our democracy.
In these trying times, let us continue to support and champion local journalism, for it is a beacon of truth and a vital cornerstone of our democratic society.
Sincerely,
David Thompson
