Popular local eatery cooking its way to better days

"We have a couple of picnic tables outside, and we are able to bring two of our restaurant tables outside as well, so we once again have a way for people to eat here, safely social distanced."

This is one in a series of articles in the feature called "Let's Eat" which focuses on the local food and dining scene. This time we touch base with the owner of Terry's Place at 524 Lakeshore Drive in North Bay.

Terry Muir is nothing if not resilient. She opened Terry's Place 13 years ago, just before the last big economic downturn. Several years later, her business suffered from a fire that had them shut down for five months. Now, her business is rebounding from the COVID climate and the pandemic impact.

Her eatery was well known as a breakfast and lunch shop, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week. "People just don't seem to eat supper that much in this strip mall," she says.

She was one of the entrepreneurs who decided to close when the height of the pandemic hit. After 10 weeks closed, she and a reduced team opened on June 3rd for take-out and haven't looked back since.

"I'm really looking forward to the day when we can have our full team back, I really miss them. Right now we're operating as a team of three, instead of the normal crew of nine we used to have," says Muir. Currently, her adapted hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with the restaurant closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

They've been going strong with take-out and are happy to see loyal regulars, as well as new customers looking to try something new while they are primarily staying at home themselves.

While their outside space is limited, Muir says they decided to expand things a bit, a couple of weeks ago. "We have a couple of picnic tables outside, and we are able to bring two of our restaurant tables outside as well, so we once again have a way for people to eat here, safely social distanced," she explains.

Their most popular items include eggs benedict, burgers, and fish and chips, as well as wraps. In addition to the standard menu versions of these items, they create weekly specials that are unique new versions of the classics, and the most popular rotate to make return appearances.

"Some of our popular eggs benny specials have been the Monte Cristo version as well as 'The California.' It has tomato, avocado and bacon."

Popular burger specials include The Southwestern Chipotle (it has bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado and chipotle) as well as The Hot Mama (bacon, cheddar, garlic aioli, lettuce, tomato, hot peppers and crispy jalapenos).

While they post regular updates on their social media, Muir says simply grabbing the phone is the best way to place an order now. "We'd love to hear from you, just give us a call at 705-475-1111."
