Ontario confirms 478 new COVID cases today

The province has not reported daily cases so high since May 8

Public Health Ontario is reporting 478 new COVID-19 cases today, which is the highest number of new cases reported in a single day since early May. 

The province has confirmed three new deaths today, including two people over the age of 80 and one person between 60 and 79 years old. 

On May 8 the province reported 477 new cases, and on May 2, the province reported 511 new cases. For both those days, the province also reported about 16,300 tests had been processed. Today's report indicates Ontario labs have processed 34,201 COVID tests in a 24-hour period. 

According to a breakdown of the 478 new cases by health unit, Toronto Public Health reported 153 new cases, Ottawa reported 90 new cases, Peel reported 95 new cases, and the remaining 31 health units reported between zero and 27 new cases for today's update.

Of today's cases, 324 are individuals under the age of 40. 

The province has confirmed 51 more school-related COVID cases today, including 26 students, seven staff, and 18 unidentified individuals. There are now 141 school-related COVID cases spread across 116 schools in Ontario. Two schools have closed.

There have now been 47,752 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Ontario, with 41,342 now listed as recovered and 2,832 cases ending in death. 

There are 3,578 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, including 81 people hospitalized with COVID-19. There are 24 COVID patients in intensive care units and 11 on ventilators. 

The average incidence rate for Ontario is 321.3 cases per 100,000 people. 

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit confirmed its 40th case in the region on Monday with only two active cases overall.
