It's been said (or at least sung) that there's no place like home for the holidays, well Second Saturday Stories is coming home this week with a return to the Detective Genre. Loyal readers of the column will recall The Eddie Banner Mystery Series gave Second Saturday Stories its debut. This week the column previews an excerpt from 'Skeleton Unburdened', a work of noir fiction currently in progress by the creator of this column Mark French.
The premise of 'Skeleton Unburdened' follows: After his fiance suffers a fatal accident during a case Percy Slate closes their detective agency to grieve. When her grief-stricken brother comes to town demanding a favour under the threat of his arrest, Percy decides to flee the city he loves.
Haunted by ghosts of his past and hunted by his ex-brother-in-law, Percy takes one last case hoping he can shake his pursuer in the underworld of post-World War I North Bay. During the case, his sanity will be called into question as Percy discovers corners of darkness within himself he thought left overseas on the battlefield. Will he be controlled by an old soldier's grief? will the winding path of the case lead to salvation, or only further into darkness? Readers will have to wait until 2022 to find out. Until then enjoy the preview showcased in this afternoon's Second Saturday Stories column. Readers will meet both Percy and his ex brother-in-law Harry, and dive headlong into the conflict that sets everything in motion. Don't miss it today at 3 pm.
Second Saturday Stories will be returning in the new year with fresh tales and more calls to local talent starting January 8th 2022
