Managing Change In The Pandemic

The only thing consistent these days is change. Managing change and new processes is challenging because people resist change.

As I talk with managers, leaders of organizations and business owners, one common question I am asked is how to best manage change during this pandemic.

Everything has changed and continues to change.  The only thing consistent these days is change.  Managing new processes throughout an organization is challenging because people resist change, and if they do embrace it from the onset, they don’t always stay committed to doing things a new way.  

Here are some tips to help manage change during this pandemic:

  1. Get people involved and participating in creating the change.  
  2. Understand that people resist social change (to relationships) more than the actual changes itself.
  3. Resistance comes from blind spots that change-makers don’t always see in their design of new ideas.
  4. Management can introduce new standards and encourage staff to think in different ways
  5. Leaders can affect attitudes of change resistance during meetings by shifting their attention from the technical details, to having discussions about the resistance and/or receptiveness of the change.
