The ancient art of appreciation of letter writing and personalized thank you cards is compromised by email, text messages, social media and other forms of electronic communication, however, it’s value should never be under-rated. When was the last time a business sent you a personalized business thank you card? I’m sure you will agree that it is not the norm. So why not make it your norm, and get into the habit of sending business thank you cards to let people know that you care about them as people, and share your gratitude.

You can thank your customers for ...
• Their business or for trying something that you recommended
• A compliment or a good joke that makes you smile
• For a referral, and every time they refer business to you
• When they are patient with something that has not gone perfectly during their transaction
• When customers say no to your product or service
• When they offer suggestions to improve

As the ideas above are mostly positive and therefore easier to write a greeting for, let me give you an example of the more difficult business thank you cards or appreciation notes that you may be more challenged with. ie. "Thank you for thinking of me to request a quote for services. I respect your decision to support a competitor. If I can be of any assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me. Your success is important to all of us.” When a customer offers suggestions to improve, or constructive feedback, you could write an appreciation letter or thank you greeting card containing text like "I appreciate your feedback about our [product or service name] and want to thank you for taking the time to let us know your opinion. Customer satisfaction is a priority for us, and customer comments like those you provided help us become better at our business. We sincerely appreciate you bringing this to our attention".

• taking the time to speak with you at a networking event
• a conversation that you had together
• an insight that they gave you or something that you learned from them
• hosting you at their place of business
• meeting with you ...

You can thank your work group of staff, managers and employer for ...
• the opportunity to work on the team
• their trust in you
• added responsibility
• a luncheon or meal provided
• being entertained off site
• staff parties or events
• their involvement in extra assigned duties or committees
• a job done well
• for gifts, recognition, celebrations and so on ...

As for thank you card etiquette, if there is one point to stress with thank you note gratitude, it is the timing. Thank you greeting cards should be sent within one week of receiving the gesture or gift.

Sending an appreciation letter or thank you greeting card is at the top of my mind as we have recently celebrated Thanksgiving here in Canada, and will soon share gratitude with Thanksgiving in the United States.
