Let me say off the top — I Love the USA!
I always have and always will. I always stand for both of our national anthems.
Your hospitality (especially Southern) is unsurpassed.
I enjoy vacationing in the U.S. and I have been known to cross-border shop.
Some of my closest friends are American. I always thought it would be fun to work there.
However, this seemingly endless presidential election season has changed my mind about a lot of things. It makes me truly sad!
I tried to stay out of it for as long as I could. On social media, I knew people would say, "Shut up, it's not your country and it's not your business." But actually, it is my business. It is the world's business. Every move the U.S. makes impacts Canada too.
In case you think I don't know what's going on, let me assure you I have been paying way too much attention.
I watch almost wall-to-wall coverage on multiple networks (although I do sometimes feel trapped in the Situation Room with Wolf). I do listen to both sides. I watched every debate all the way through. I even know the names of all the pundits. I have been watching and listening and cringing for the better part of two years.
Bottom line: Canada and the U.S. have always been best friends. A best friend should be able to tell his friend respectfully:
"Give your head a shake!"
"What the hell are you thinking?"
"You are dating the wrong guy — he's a big jerk!"
I do not understand the hatred by some toward the Obamas. Every time either of them speak it makes your country look good. Calm, intelligent, funny, professional and in control.
I see the same qualities when Hillary speaks.
I didn't have anything against Donald Trump when it all started. I could see how his message would resonate. He was not a politician. He was saying some of the things some may have been thinking. Then, he went completely off the rails hating on everyone. He doesn't ever complete a sentence. Try following his train of thought, it'll make you dizzy. I had washed my hands of him even before his alleged past came back to bite him in the butt.
The best quote of this whole messy campaign may have come from Maya Angelou. "When someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time."
I mean no disrespect with my comments. In true Canadian form, I apologize if they do offend.
I hope when this whole sordid saga is over that we will all go back to being friends.
Let's get back to judging each other on what truly matters on social media — our selfies and our grammar!
