The Role

The position administers Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) processes and procedures, and works with the ERM Manager to report findings, status of key risks, and other risk matters to the Executive Management team and to the Board of Directors and the Audit Committee. This role supports Algoma’s Executive Management team, who manage the key risks of the Company.

Key Deliverables

  • Provide support to the ERM manager and the Executive Management team on an on-going basis in order to assist in managing and controlling the top risks of the organization, including facilitating utilization of Algoma’s ERM processes, procedures, risk framework, and systems.
  • Maintain the cloud based ERM platform including training, input on behalf of risk constituents, developing reports and ensuring data integrity and cleanliness. Assist in developing new modules for the platform.
  • Assist in developing reports for the Executive Management team and Board of Directors on a bi-weekly and monthly basis in order to provide insight on risk development, progress on mitigation strategies, negative trends or high-risk areas and emerging risks for the organization.
  • Support and enhance the work performed by other risk practitioners of the Company.
  • Benchmark and implement best practices in risk management to ensure a structured framework is applied to identify, assess, control and monitor top strategic risks as well as business and operational risks at Algoma.
  • Active involvement in developing and managing the risk management framework for the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) project.
  • Assist in developing education for the organization on risk awareness, and building a proactive risk identification culture and preparedness. This may include developing e-learning offerings for Algoma employees.

Core Competencies and Skills Required

  • University degree in Business, Economics, Accounting, Risk Management, Engineering, or Law preferred. A college diploma will also be considered.
  • Certified Risk Management (CRM) or equivalent or a CIP (Certified Insurance Professional) will be an asset.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and report writing skills.
  • Three (3) years of heavy industry experience (Steel industry is an asset) is preferred.
  • Advanced level ability in Microsoft Office products, especially in Excel, and the ability to quickly learn other MS products such as Project.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage several activities simultaneously to achieve project milestones.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Experience working with SAP business applications is an asset.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, cross-functional team atmosphere.

This is an exempt position.
