Driver charged following collision yesterday
Following an investigation into a collision between a car and a man in a battery-powered mobility scooter yesterday, North Bay Police charged the driver of the car with failing to yield to pedestrian under the Highway Traffic Act.
It is alleged that the female driver, who was turning left onto McKeown Avenue at Champlain Street on a green light, struck the man who was lawfully crossing the road at the crosswalk yesterday afternoon at approximately 12:29 p.m.
The man sustained injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to hospital by ambulance.
ROAD SAFETY TIPS
It is up to both drivers and pedestrians to keep everyone safe on Ontario roads.
Drivers are reminded to:
Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning.
Watch for children. Drive slowly and cautiously through school zones, residential areas, or any other area where children could be walking or playing.
Watch out for Community Safety Zone signs that indicate areas where there is a special risk to pedestrians.
Be patient, especially with seniors or persons with disabilities who need more time to cross the road.
Always be ready to stop for pedestrians making sudden or unexpected moves.
Pedestrians are reminded to:
Cross only at marked crosswalks or traffic lights. Don't cross in the middle of the block or between parked cars.
Make sure drivers see you before you cross. If the driver is stopped, make eye contact before you step into the road.
Wear bright or light-coloured clothing or reflective strips, especially at dusk or when it's dark.
When crossing at a traffic light, pedestrians are reminded to:
Cross when traffic has come to a complete stop.
Cross at the start of a green light.
Don't cross once the “Don't Walk” signal starts to flash or the light turns yellow.
Never cross on a red light.
Watch for traffic turning at intersections or turning into and leaving driveways.
Letter Scam Alert
The North Bay Police Service received two separate complaints today from residents who received letters in the mail that were addressed to their names.
The letter writer claims to be an accountant from the United Kingdom who believes the recipient of the letter may be the beneficiary of the estate of a deceased millionaire who shares the same family name.
Residents are advised that this letter is a scam.
The letter writer claims to be from a London-based company identified as “Mutual Accountant Inc.”, with the following two emails listed: [email protected] or [email protected]
Recipients of this fraudulent letter are asked not to contact or send personal information or money to the letter sender in any way.
If you receive a similar letter and wish to report the scam, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (at http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca) to report the incident and then simply destroy the letter.
