North Bay man accused of robbery and several thefts

Yesterday, following a robbery investigation and ongoing theft investigations, North Bay Police arrested and charged:

William James McDaid, age 36, of North Bay with:
One count of robbery;
Four counts of theft under $5,000; and
Five counts of breach of probation.

It is alleged that on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, shortly before 6 p.m., the accused took a piggy bank that was sitting on the counter of a local restaurant and then fled the scene on foot. While restaurant staff called 9-1-1, the female restaurant owner immediately pursued the accused towards Seventh Avenue, where the owner grabbed the accused’s coat to prevent him from leaving. The accused then pushed the owner to the ground and fled the area. Police located and arrested the accused on Cassells Street. Police also recovered the stolen property and returned it to the victim.

It is also alleged that:
on Jan. 16, 2017, at about 12:12 a.m., the accused removed lottery tickets from the front counter of a local convenience store and fled the scene without paying for them.
on Jan. 16, 2017, at about 12:22 a.m., the accused removed lottery tickets from the front counter of a second local convenience store and fled the scene without paying for them.
on Jan. 16, 2017, at about 12:30 a.m., the accused removed lottery tickets from the front counter of a third local convenience store and fled the scene without paying for them.
on Jan. 16, 2017, at about 12:43 a.m., the accused removed lottery tickets from the front counter of a fourth local convenience store without paying for them. He then proceeded to play one of the stolen scratch tickets in front of the cashier. He “won” $50 and redeemed the winnings of the stolen ticket from the cashier. He then took a remote control drone that was on display and left without paying for it.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
