Scammers, pretending to represent the North Bay Public Library, are using an overdue book scam to try and steal your money warns police.

It's not fiction. The North Bay Police Service says it has received reports of scammers posing as the library demanding payment from individuals for overdue fees.

"Scammers are sending e-mails to individuals in North Bay falsely claiming to represent the North Bay Public Library," says spokesman David Woolley. "The e-mails include a link to a payment website where victims are asked to pay the fraudulent fees to the scammers. If you receive one of these e-mails, do not click the link and do not pay the alleged overdue fee."

The North Bay Public Library does send notices of overdue fees via e-mail, but they do not accept online payments and do not include payment links.

It will always send final notices for overdue fees via traditional mail says a news release.

If you receive a notice of overdue fees from someone claiming to be the North Bay Public Library that you find suspicious, you can call the North Bay Public Library to confirm whether or not you have an outstanding fee. The North Bay Public Library can be reached at 705-474-4830.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of this or any other scam, contact the North Bay Police Service at 705-497-5555.
