Driver ticketed following collision on Chippewa

On Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, North Bay Police concluded its investigation into a collision that took place at 1:23 p.m. that afternoon, on the 200 block of Chippewa Street East, between Wyld and Fisher.

At the time, City crew were conducting road work. While the westbound lane of Chippewa Street East was open to traffic, the eastbound lane was closed and barricaded. A male driver, who had been travelling northbound on Wyld Street, turned right and then entered the westbound lane of Chippewa to avoid the detour. While doing so, the driver hit a City worker, who sustained minor injuries.

As a result of the investigation, police issued a ticket to the driver for “drive wrong way – divided highway” under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, section 156 (1) (a).

Man faces charge for possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose

Following an investigation into a complainant’s report of a suspicious person at a shopping mall on Lakeshore Drive on Friday 14th October shortly before 5 p.m., North Bay Police arrested and charged Robert John Harris, age 63, of North Bay with one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

It is alleged that the accused was carrying a large machete, in the event he needed to use if for his own protection. Police seized the weapon as evidence.

The accused was later released from custody with a court date scheduled for Nov. 22, 2016.

Man accused of careless use of firearm

Shortly before 2 a.m. this morning (Monday, Oct. 17, 2016), North Bay Police patrol officers were dispatched to Besserer Road following numerous calls to police reporting a loud party and sounds of shots being fired.

Following an investigation, police arrested and charged Lee Mitchell, a 52-year-old North Bay man with one count of careless use of firearm. It is alleged that the accused, who was in an intoxicated state at the time, was firing shots in the air. Police seized a 12-gauge shotgun and a 303 calibre rifle and casings as evidence.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Under-aged driver faces numerous charges

Following a police pursuit of a speeding vehicle on Saturday morning, and an arrest made by West Nipissing Police later that day, North Bay Police charged a young male, under 16 years of age, with the following charges.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act of Canada’s Criminal Code, he was charged with:
One count of flight from police;
One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; and
Two counts of breach of probation.

Under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, he was charged with:
One count of disobey stop sign – fail to stop; and
One count of drive – no licence.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, at approximately 11:28 a.m., a North Bay Police Service patrol officer observed the accused driving northbound on McNamara Street and then speed onto McGibbon Street. The officer then activated his police cruiser’s emergency lights and siren, however, the accused continued to speed.

As the police pursuit continued, the accused turned eastbound onto Cartier Street, accelerating at speeds of more than 80 km/hour. The accused then sped through a four-way stop at Cartier and Champlain Streets, failing to stop for a vehicle that had the right of way.

When the accused reached the dead end on Cartier Street, he drove over a grass embankment and a curb and then onto Highway 11. For safety reasons, the police pursuit was discontinued at this point.

A short time after this incident, a West Nipissing Police Service officer stopped and arrested the accused in their jurisdiction, where he was held in custody for a bail hearing.
