On Saturday, July 1, 2017, shortly after midnight, following a 9-1-1 call to police reporting two residents of Nipissing Detention Centre escaped from the facility.

The following is a news release from North Bay Police:

Two youths escape custody

On Saturday, July 1, 2017, shortly after midnight, following a 9-1-1 call to police reporting two residents of Nipissing Detention Centre escaped from the facility. North Bay Police arrested and charged two youths with:

One count of escape lawful custody
One count of robbery
One count of assault
One count of choking
One count of mischief
One count of theft of motor vehicle
One count of possesion of property obtained by crime
One of the youths was also charged with failing to comply with sentence

It is alleged on Saturday, July 1, 2017, shortly after midnight, the two accused assaulted two staff members of the Nipissing Detention Centre. They stole a vehicle belonging to the Nipissing Detention Centre and other items from the facility and fled in the stolen vehicle. They were located driving on Highway 17 West.

With the assistance of other police agencies, including Anishinabek Police Serivce, West Nipissing Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police, a spike belt was deployed and the two accused were arrested.

The two accused were held for a bail hearing on July 1, 2017 and they were remanded into custody.

The victims suffered non life threatening injuries.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act accused can not be named.
