Weekend Occurrences
Over the weekend, the North Bay Police Service responded to 204 calls for service and arrested and charged 14 people with the following offences:
One person was charged with one count of obstruct police and one count of care and control while impaired by drug;
One person was charged with one count of obstruct police and one count of possession of a schedule I substance;
One person was charged with one count of sexual assault, one count of theft under $5000, two counts of assault, two counts of mischief, one count of break, enter and commit, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of breach of probation and one count of breach of undertaking;
Six people were charged with public intoxication;
One person was charged with domestic assault;
One person was charged with one count of assault peace officer, one count of assault with intent to resist arrest, one count of utter threats; and two counts of breach of probation; and
Three people were charged for breaches.
Traffic stop leads to charges
Following a traffic stop conducted on Sunday morning, North Bay Police arrested and charged two people.
A 29-year-old North Bay man, who was held in custody for a bail hearing today, faces:
One count of obstruct police officer; and
One count of care and control while impaired by drug, both under the Criminal Code.
A 28-year-old North Bay woman, who was released from custody with a court date scheduled for March 16, 2016, faces:
One count of obstruct police officer, under the Criminal Code; and
One count of possession of a schedule I substance, under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
It is alleged that shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Ferguson and McIntyre Streets, the male accused, who was the driver of a vehicle police stopped at the time, was unable to provide a driver’s licence and falsely identified himself to police when asked. A short time later the female accused arrived at the scene and confirmed to police that the male accused was who he said he was. Following an investigation, police discovered that the name given was not his. When police attempted to arrest the driver, he exited the vehicle and immediately fled the scene on foot. Following a short foot pursuit, police arrested him on McIntyre Street and transported him to police headquarters where he was tested by a qualified North Bay Police Service drug recognition officer. Results of the test indicate that the accused was impaired by drug.
Police searched the woman following her arrest and seized a number of suspected morphine pills that were in her possession.
Man faces several charges for assault
Early Saturday morning, outside a nightclub on Main Street East, North Bay Police arrested and charged:
Bernard Joseph Gagnon, age 27, of North Bay with:
One count of assault peace officer;
One count of assault with intent to resist arrest;
One count of utter threats; and
Two counts of breach of probation.
It is alleged that shortly after 2 a.m. on February 6, 2016, the accused, who appeared to police to be in a highly intoxicated state, was placed under arrest for failing to identify under the Liquor Licence Act. While at the police cruiser, the accused resisted arrest and assaulted police officers. He is also accused of threatening police officers while he was being transported to police headquarters.
The accused was held in custody for bail.
Break and enter leads to several charges
Following an investigation into a break and enter at a downtown residence that was reported to the North Bay Police Service shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2016, police arrested and charged a 27-year-old North Bay man with:
One count of sexual assault;
One count of theft under $5,000;
Two counts of assault;
Two counts of mischief;
One count of break, enter and commit;
Two counts of possession of a controlled substance;
Two counts of breach of probation; and
One count of breach of undertaking.
It is alleged that the accused sexual assaulted a woman known to him sometime overnight between February 6 and 7, 2016 at a friend’s residence. He is also accused of stealing cash and of assaulting her. After leaving the residence shortly before 11 a.m., the accused returned a short time later and forced his way into the residence, causing damage. He is accused of assaulting her a second time before leaving the premises. Police located and arrested him nearby, shortly thereafter. A search after the arrest revealed that he was in possession of a small quantity of suspected morphine and two prescription pills, believed to be Suboxone.
The accused, whose name the North Bay Police Service is withholding in the interest of protecting the identity of the victim, was held in custody for a bail hearing today.
Driver faces HTA charge
Following an investigation into a three-vehicle collision involving a school bus that took place on Friday, February 5, 2016, shortly before 4 p.m. at McKeown Avenue and Champlain Street, North Bay Police issued a ticket to the male driver of a car for “Left turn – fail to afford reasonable opportunity to avoid collision,” under section 141 (5) of the Highway Traffic Act.
It is alleged that while travelling eastbound on McKeown Avenue, the car driver made a left turn onto Champlain Street and struck a jeep that was travelling westbound on McKeown Avenue. As a result of the collision, the jeep swerved into the opposing lane and subsequently struck a school bus, which was travelling eastbound on McKeown.
There were no students on the school bus at the time.
The male driver of the jeep sustained minor injuries.
