Public Safety Warning: Open water in Callander

The North Bay Police Service is warning the public that there is open water off the boat launch in Callander.

A local towing company reported the concern to police this morning after a vehicle went through the ice about 300 feet off the boat launch in Callander. As a result, there is open water approximately 9 feet by 6 feet in area. The public is advised to avoid the marked and cordoned off area.

Single-vehicle collision leads to charges

On Sunday, following an investigation into an abandoned vehicle that had travelled off the roadway on Wallace Road near Trout Lake Road, North Bay Police arrested and charged the owner of the vehicle—a 24-year-old North Bay man—with:
One count of fail to remain under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act; and
One count of public mischief under Canada’s Criminal Code.

It is alleged that in the morning of Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, the accused drove his vehicle off of the roadway on Wallace Road and down a steep incline. The vehicle and the highway guardrails were extensively damaged as a result. The accused, who suffered no injuries, left the vehicle and fled the area on foot without contacting authorities or attempting to report the collision.

Later that morning, the accused called police to report that his vehicle was stolen. He later admitted to police that his vehicle had not been stolen and that he had been the one driving at the time of the single-vehicle collision.

The accused was released from custody with a court date scheduled for Apr. 11, 2017.
