Weekend Occurrences

Over the weekend, the North Bay Police Service responded to 234 calls for service and arrested and charged 18 people with the following offences:
One person was charged with one count of theft under $5,000 (shoplifting) and one count of breach of probation;
Two people were charged with one count of theft under $5,000 (shoplifting);
One person was charged with forcible confinement;
One person was charged with unlawful in dwelling;
One person was charged with two counts of criminal harassment and two counts of uttering threats;
One person was charged with assault with a weapon;
One person was charged with one count of break and enter with intent, one count of assault causing bodily harm, one count of assault and one count of mischief under $5,000;
One person was charged with one count of theft under $5,000; one count of identity fraud; one count of use of credit card; one count of possession of property obtained by crime; and one count of breach of probation;
One person was charged with break and enter and commit;
One person was charged with theft of motor vehicle and drive over 80;
One person was charged with one count of obstruct police and one count of possession of cocaine;
One person was charged with one count of breach of peace;
One person was charged with one count of carry concealed weapon and six counts of breach of probation;
One person was charged with public intoxication and one count of breach of recognizance; and
Three people were charged with public intoxication.

Three face charges for shoplifting

Following a complaint to police regarding a shoplifting incident that took place at a retail store on Fisher Street on Sunday afternoon, North Bay Police arrested and charged three people.

A 47-year-old North Bay man, who was held in custody pending bail, was charged with:
One count of theft under $5,000 (shoplifting); and
One count of breach of probation.

A 43-year-old woman and a 48-year old man, both from North Bay and both released with a court date scheduled for March 1st, were each charged with:
One count of theft under $5,000 (shoplifting).

It is alleged that shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, 2016, the first accused took an empty cart into the store and proceeded to fill his reusable grocery bags with a variety of store items, including food and electronics. He then wheeled the cart filled with the goods to the front of the store and gave it to the female co-accused who left the store with the items and without paying for them. Once outside the store, the woman left the cart full of the items by the front door where the third co-accused retrieved the bags full of the goods from the cart, put them into a second cart and then fled the scene. Police located and arrested all three accused outside the store.

The total retail value of the stolen items is just under $400.

Man faces charge for forcible confinement

Following an investigation into a complaint received at 8:50 p.m. on Sunday evening, North Bay Police arrested and charged a 52-year-old man with one count of forcible confinement.

It is alleged that on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 10:17 a.m., a female registered nurse entered the accused’s room in the North Bay Regional Health Centre’s Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. The accused then closed his door and prevented her from leaving the room. Another nurse came to the victim’s assistance. Hospital security also responded. The victim was not physically injured as a result of this incident.

The accused was held in custody for bail.

North Bay man faces charge for unlawful in dwelling

Following a 911 complaint to police received shortly after midnight this morning, North Bay Police arrested and charged a 27-year-old North Bay man with one count of unlawfully in dwelling.

It is alleged that in the early morning hours of February 1, 2016, the accused forced his way into his girlfriend’s residence causing damage. He then left the scene on foot. The victim was not injured.

Police located, arrested and charged him shortly thereafter.

The accused, whose name the North Bay Police Service is withholding to protect the identity of the victim, was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Threatening messages lead to charges

At 11:58 a.m. on Sunday January 31, 2016, a complainant contacted police to report that she had received threatening messages from a man she was in contact with through the online dating website, Plenty of Fish.

At 12:08 p.m. on Sunday January 31, 2016, a second complainant contacted police to report that she, too, had received threatening messages from a man she was in contact with through the same website.

Following an investigation into both complaints, North Bay Police arrested and charged a 23-year-old North Bay man with:
Two counts of criminal harassment; and
Two counts of uttering threats.

The accused was released from custody with a court date scheduled for March 1, 2016.

North Bay man faces assault with a weapon charge following domestic incident

Following an investigation into a domestic violence incident that was reported to police on Saturday afternoon, North Bay Police arrested a 31-year-old North Bay man at police headquarters on Saturday evening and charged him with one count of assault with a weapon.

It is alleged that on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at approximately 9:30 p.m., an argument between the accused and his common-law spouse turned violent when he hit her with a household object.

The accused, whose name the North Bay Police Service is withholding to protect the identity of the victim, was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Break and Enter leads to charges

Following a 911 call to police received shortly after midnight on Sunday, North Bay Police arrested and charged James Montgomery Stevens, age 48, of North Bay with:
One count of break and enter with intent;
One count of assault causing bodily harm;
One count of assault; and
One count of mischief under $5,000.

It is alleged that on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at approximately 12:10 a.m., the accused pushed his way into a residential unit without invitation and caused damage to items inside. He is also accused of assaulting the male and female residents. As a result of the incident, the male victim required medical attention for his non-life-threatening injuries.

Police located and arrested the accused at his residence shortly thereafter. He was later released from custody with a court date scheduled for March 8, 2016.

Man accused of break and enter and theft of bicycle

Following an investigation into a report of a break and enter and theft that occurred on Saturday night, North Bay Police arrested and charged Dwayne Edwin Heintz, age 49, of North Bay with:
One count of break, enter and commit.

It is alleged that at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, the accused entered the garage of a residential property and stole a mountain bicycle from within. Police located him and the described bicycle at the accused’s residence shortly thereafter.

He was released from custody with a court date scheduled for March 8, 2016.

Man accused of stealing car keys and wallet also faces fraud charges

On Monday, January 18, 2016, a complainant contacted police to report that her car keys were taken from the pocket of her coat while she was at work by someone unknown to her. She also reported that her vehicle was entered and her wallet was stolen from inside her vehicle.

Following an investigation, North Bay Police arrested Joseph Allen MacKenzie, age 26, of North Bay at police headquarters on Friday January 29th and charged him with:
One count of theft under $5000;
One count of identity fraud;
One count of use of credit card;
One count of possession of property obtained by crime; and
One count of breach of probation.

It is alleged that on Monday January 18, 2016, between 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., the accused went to a medical office building in North Bay and removed the car keys from a staff member’s coat. He then left the office, located the victim’s vehicle in the parking lot and used the key to enter it. It is also alleged that he stole the victim’s wallet from inside the vehicle. Later that afternoon, the accused attempted to use the victim’s credit card to make a cash advance but was unsuccessful. He then called the credit card company, fraudulently impersonated the victim and had her personal identification number (PIN) changed. He was then successful at making a cash advance from an ATM using the credit card’s new PIN.

The accused was held in custody pending bail.

R.I.D.E. Campaign over the weekend

Over the weekend, the North Bay Police Service conducted a Reduced Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) campaign. A total of 462 vehicles were stopped.

Results include:
Three drivers were charged with Highway Traffic Act infractions;
One driver was charged with drive over 80 and theft of motor vehicle (see details below).

North Bay man in stolen vehicle stopped during RIDE

Shortly before midnight on Friday, January 29, a complainant contacted police to report that his car was stolen from a parking lot on McIntyre Street East.

Two hours later, the driver of the reported stolen vehicle was stopped while North Bay Police officers were conducting a R.I.D.E. campaign at Main Street East and Judge Avenue.

As a result of the investigation, North Bay Police arrested and charged Zachary Charles McEdwards, age 21, of North Bay with:
One count of Driving with Over 80 mgs of Alcohol in Blood; and
One count of theft of motor vehicle.

The accused was held in custody for bail.

North Bay man faces charges for obstruct police and possession of cocaine

Following a traffic stop conducted on Bloem Street shortly before 2 a.m. on January 30, 2016, North Bay Police arrested and charged a 25-year-old North Bay man with:
one count of obstruct peace officer; and
one count of possession of a cocaine.

It is alleged that the accused used a false name to identify himself to police to avoid being arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court to face other unrelated charges. A police search following his arrest at police headquarters revealed that he was in possession of 0.3 grams of cocaine, which police seized as evidence.

The accused was held pending a bail hearing.
