North Bay Police Service arrested a 34-year-old man on assault and weapons charges yesterday after he drew a knife on employees of a downtown charity.

Police believe the same man is involved with two downtown violent incidents.

On July 25, a man went to a social services agency on Main Street West and while at the office, became agitated and damaged property, trying to assault an employee of the agency.  He threw office property at the victim while she fled for her safety, and shortly thereafter left the office.

Then on August 11, the same man entered the office of a charity organization on Main Street East. Police say he behaved "in a volatile manner."

To ensure their safety, two victims, both employees of the charity, locked an inner door to the office, preventing the man from getting at them. He then threw property at the door, causing damage to the office, and brandished a knife that he swung in the direction of the victims while making several threats against their lives.

The attacker fled before police arrived. He was arrested and charged a short time later and a search revealed he was carrying a hidden knife.

Police say the victims sustained no physical injuries and did not know their attacker.

Kenneth Armstrong, 34, of North Bay, is charged with:

  • Two counts of assault with a weapon
  • Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Two counts of mischief under $5,000

Armstrongg was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the North Bay Courthouse.
