Asleep at the wheel. Driver charged

Investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling south on the highway and the driver had fallen asleep, before striking the guard rails

On May 14, at 4 p.m., Nipissing West OPP officers responded to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 69, French River.  

Investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling south on the highway and the driver had fallen asleep, before striking the guard rails.

Both the driver and passenger were taken to the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A test indicated that the driver had consumed alcohol.  

A 24-year-old from Britt, is charged with:

  • Careless driving
  • Novice driver - blood alcohol concentration above zero

The driver was issued two Provincial Offence Notices with set fines for the offences.

The OPP reminds motorists to recognize some of the signs of fatigue; yawing, eyes closing, losing focus, blinking more than usual, feeling drowsy, lightheaded and having trouble keeping your head up.

If you feel fatigued while driving pull over and take a rest. Only sleep can cure fatigue!
