Officials are looking at contact tracing as a way to track the spread of COVID-19 within our communities in real time.

However, security experts say the tracing system comes with some serious privacy concerns.

Ann Cavoukian is the Executive Director of the Global Privacy & Security by Design Centre, and she's also Ontario's former privacy commissioner

She tells the Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS, she doesn't think anyone will sign up for it because of the privacy concerns.

"The individuals would like to know if they've been exposed to someone who has self-reported as being COVID-19 positive, but without any of their personal information being released, no geolocation data tracking -- nothing. It has to be completely privacy protected."

Cavoukian says building trust is key in convincing people to voluntarily sign up for contact tracing.

"If there's trust that the Apple and Google framework will not reveal any information and is totally privacy-protected, then it will be far more likely for people to download this app more easily. And the reason Apple and Google work together is because the primary mobile devices out there are Apples and Androids."
