How to make your entryway more welcoming

A few pieces can make a big difference, adding functionality and style

When you enter certain homes, they feel warm and welcoming immediately, and that’s by design.

Usually, it’s because they have been thoughtfully decorated. Whether you have a grand foyer with a generous footprint or a tiny entryway, a few specific pieces can help pull the space together and create a homey feeling. They’ll also ensure that you’ll have everything you need close at hand.

A handy table

You’ll never regret having a convenient place to put your keys or a bag of groceries as soon as you come home. A slim console table, if you have the room, is ideal for this. The Freedan console table is a grayish-brown piece done in modern farmhouse style; it has a beautiful woodgrain look and classic crossbuck metal accents, as well as two drawers and a lower shelf. It looks great and performs an important function.

If space isn’t an issue, you could also use a dresser for this purpose. The Havalance chest doesn’t take up a lot of floorspace but will definitely keep you organized; its five drawers can hold a lot, including hats, mittens, scarves and all of your dog-walking accessories. This two-tone chest also has a substantial look to it, with excellent craftsmanship and distinctive details.

Another bonus to having a piece of furniture in your entryway is that you can decorate the surface and use it to communicate your décor style. To set the tone, choose elements that give a nod to the season; something small and understated would be perfect. You could even use a tray to ground your vignette. The gold-finish Posy tray can stylishly hold your essentials and the Milesen tray’s combination of lacquered navy and natural wood adds elegance to any spot.

A piece of art

If you have the wall space in your entryway, hanging a mirror or a piece of art is a nice added touch. Just a single piece will do, as you don’t want to overwhelm the space. A mirror is particularly useful as you can use it to check your appearance one last time before heading out.

The Lanie accent mirror is guaranteed to add warmth, with its antiqued brown finish, rough sawn wood and a metal faux barn door track. The Jacee accent mirror is another handsome option; it can be hung both vertically and horizontally. Hallwood wall art, a collection of 4 pieces, features an abstract design done in black, white, gray and taupe, and looks very sophisticated.

Storage for your footwear

Keep your footwear organized and off the floor with a sturdy shoe rack. It will help to keep the space clear and make your entryway feel less cluttered. The Maccenet shoe rack is pretty enough to be out on display or it can be tucked away, out of sight, in your closet, depending on your preference. It’s a versatile piece that includes three cubbies, three shoe racks and a top shelf.

A soft floor covering

To stop outside dirt and debris from entering your home, have a rug or a mat do the heavy lifting for you. It’s also a great opportunity to add some colour and to warm up a space that can traditionally be a bit cold.

If your entryway is larger, the 5’ x 7’ Roskos area rug is an excellent choice. The black, cream and gray mix is modern, durable and abstract. It is soft underfoot but will hide any footprints.

The benefit to decorating your entryway thoughtfully is that it isn’t just for guests’ comfort; it will serve as a wonderful way to welcome you home every time you return.
