What supplements are popular with local seniors - and why?

"We have customers of all ages, but yes we do have seniors and customers who've been with us since the store opened. We have some families where we have the grandparents, their kids, and their grandkids."

This is one in a monthly series of articles as part of the "Prime" feature, which looks at topics that relate to seniors

This time around we stop in at The Country Way and talk with owner John O'Rourke.

The store carries health foods and vitamin supplements.

O'Rourke says in their business it's all about simply making the consumer aware.

"We're not doctors, we're very careful to simply describe the differences between our products and supplements, and let the consumer decide what they'd like to try," he explains.

The store has been open for 43 years and he's owned it for 32.

"We have customers of all ages, but yes we do have seniors and customers who've been with us since the store opened. We have some families where we have the grandparents, their kids, and their grandkids," he adds.

One of the most popular items with seniors is Curcumin, which is the yellow pigment in Tumeric.

"It helps with joint inflammation and associated symptoms such as joint pain,"

Another big seller is Magnesium, which "Helps with proper muscle function, and is a factor in the maintenance of good health, and nervous system health."

He says that many clients tell him that it also helps with their stress and relaxing in the evening before bed.

Another highlighted item is pro-biotics, which O'Rourke says "Help restore intestinal balance and intestinal health."

He adds you should always get probiotics that are refrigerated, not left on the shelf.

Like so many other businesses, The Country Way at 170 Main Street East was impacted by the COVID crisis and switched from being a typical retailer to doing curbside service and delivery out of necessity.
