Respiratory therapy students provide Christmas gifts for children

'None of these students are local so their consideration of the needs of marginalized children in our community is commendable'

Here's a good news story about a wonderful group of Canadore RT students.

Early in August, coordinator Sandra Walsh received an email from her second-year program representative Christina Rorison, seeking permission to organize a fundraising initiative.

Specifically, she was proposing an idea whereby she would liaise with a community agency to identify children in need for the Christmas season, then lead the first and second-year students to provide these children with Christmas gifts.

"Christina decided to liaise with the North Bay Crisis Centre and through Linda Gravelle she was provided a list of children in need of Christmas gifts," Walsh told BayToday. "The RT students were allowed to sponsor a child from this list and provide a wrapped Christmas gift.  Very quickly all of the children were sponsored and the students set out to purchase the gifts."

On Tuesday the wrapped gifts were dropped off at the Crisis Centre.

"What makes this story particularly impressive is that the student’s motivation was purely philanthropic as this was not tied to any program or course requirement," explained Walsh. "As it happens none of these students are local so their consideration of the needs of marginalized children in our community is commendable."
