Sinkhole closes Cassells

A city worker told BayToday it was caused by a broken sewer pipe

A three-foot-wide sinkhole which opened up this afternoon at the intersection of Cassells and Olive St. should be repaired by early tomorrow (Sunday) morning says a city spokesman on-site.

The hole was reported around 4:30 p.m. and Cassells was closed in both directions.

A city worker told BayToday it was caused by a broken sewer pipe.

The hole, now surrounded by cones and barriers, is right in the middle of the street.

Work crews were expected to show up by 6 p.m. and they'll work through the night to repair the pipe, fill in the hole, and reopen it to traffic by sunrise.

City Police issued a statement, "At 4:39 PM the North Bay Police Service and the City of North Bay Public Works closed the intersection of Cassells Street at Olive Street due to the appearance of a sinkhole.  Motorists are asked to avoid the area to allow repair crews access.  Barricades providing detour routes are being erected.  Traffic going to and from Highway 11/17 are encouraged to use Fisher Street or Seymour Street."
