OPP: Locals charged in cottage break-in owner watched via camera

The owner of the cottage called nearby neighbours who went over and prevented two suspects from leaving until police arrived — a third suspect fled on foot but was located nearby a short time later

West Parry Sound OPP have arrested and charged three people with ties to North Bay and Sturgeon Falls with break and enter, as well as multiple other offences.

On March 17, officers were called to a seasonal cottage in Blair Township, located along Highway 522 approximately 100 kilometres southwest of North Bay.

The owner saw people breaking into his cottage on security cameras. The owner called nearby neighbours who went to the cottage and prevented the two suspects from leaving until the police arrived. A third suspect fled on foot but was located nearby a short time later.   

Derrick Trudel, 32, from North Bay, is charged with:

  • Break and enter into a dwelling house with intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Disguise with intent
  • Two counts of Failure to comply with release order
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Mischief under $5,000

Brandon Hines, 29, from North Bay, is charged with:

  • Break and enter into a dwelling house with intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Unlawfully in a dwelling house
  • Disguise with intent
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Mischief under $5,000  

Ugo Kalu, 37, from Sturgeon Falls is charged with break and enter into a dwelling house with intent to commit an indictable offence.

All three accused were held for bail and remanded into custody. Trudel and Kalu were scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound today.  Hines is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound tomorrow.
