Lest we forget: Memorial Gardens, Nov. 11

On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, a full house at Memorial Gardens remembered those who fought and those who died, those who loved and were loved, and those who lived, felt dawn, and saw sunset glow.

Such was the mood at Forever Remembered, the Remembrance Day service organized by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 23.

The ceremony brought a tear to Ernie Garnham's eye.

He served in Europe and Northern Africa during the Second World War.

"I'm thinking about a lot of fellows who died over there, and we had 20 people in our regiment who died in one day in Italy crossing a river," said Garnham, 83, who served in the Governor General's Horse Guards, in Toronto.
"A lot of those people were my buddies too."

Never knew when your time was up
Garnham said a normal mantra in action during those days was 'Thank God I'm here for another day.'

"You never knew when your time was up, you never knew when that guy upstairs was going to call you," said Garnham, who moved to North Bay 14 years ago from Toronto.

Remembrance Day is a particularly difficult day for him, Garnham said.

"It brings back an awful lot of memories, things that I remember and that I don't think about all the rest of the year except now," Garnham said.

"I don't reminisce too much about the war. I saw enough, and I never want to see another one."
