HIGH FLOW ADVISORY ISSUED FOR AREA WATERWAYS

NORTH BAY - The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, (MNR) Public Works and Government Services and the North Bay - Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) have issued a high flow advisory for area waterways, excluding Lake Nipissing. The recent snowmelt combined with heavy rains and saturated ground conditions have caused local streams, rivers and drainage ditches to swell to spring freshet levels.

MNR Lands and Waters Technical Specialist, Phil Hall says there is no danger of flooding for lands adjacent to Lake Nipissing at this time. Its current level stands at 195.66 metres above sea level, 19 centimetres below the optimum summer navigation level. Lake Nipissing’s winter drawdown started after Thanksgiving weekend, however, the unseasonably high flow in the French River has stalled the process.

Drier conditions are forecasted up to Friday, however another low pressure system is expected to move into the central and northeastern areas over the weekend. As a result, these areas could see as much as 75 – 100 millimetres of rain.

People are urged to use extreme caution around area waterways due to the high flows and cold water temperatures. Dams operated by the MNR, Ontario Power Generation, Public Works and Government Services Canada are being adjusted as necessary to regulate the high water and flow rates.

Water levels continue to be closely monitored throughout the district by the MNR, NBMCA, municipalities and other water management agencies.
