Recently the University of Waterloo hosted the 42 annual Canadian Mathematics Competition Seminar where the best and brightest math students from high schools across the country demonstrated their skills.

56 students, including Chippewa student Alison Fung, impressed the judging panel and they were selected to participate in the university's Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) spring seminar from June 5th to June 11th. Fung has also received an $800 bursary for the seminar where she will spend an intense week focused on working in groups to problem-solve as well as participate in competitive math relays which will test and sharpen their skills.

More than 200,000 students write one of CEMC's mathematics competitions and fewer than 60 attend the week long seminar.

A humble Fung doesn’t consider herself at the top of Canada’s math wizards but says she is very honoured that the committee selected her to participate.

``It doesn’t mean that I am top 60,`` she says quickly.

``Don’t get under that impression, cause when I first got it I was like I can’t be top 60 in the province cause that would be ridiculous. So I think it was a random choice the way they did it.``

``But (I’m) so excited.``

Fung says she has always been interested in the field of science and won`t make any snap decisions to change her scholastic path until after she has completed the seminar.

Fung won`t have anytime to relax after the competition as she will be taking off to Peru for a medical mission with her family.
