A bridge on Highway 65 in Elk Lake, just northwest of Temiskaming Shores, has been dedicated in memory of OPP Constable Vaughn B. McKay, who died while serving in the line of duty.

McKay, just 23, tragically passed away from a brain aneurysm on December 20, 1973, suffered as the result of a car accident while responding to a traffic collision. He left behind his wife and two sons.

A brain aneurysm is a ballooning arising from a weakened area in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain.

Memorial signs with the officer’s name and police service crest have been posted on each side of the bridge in his honour.

“At this bridge dedication, we pay tribute to Provincial Constable Vaughn B. McKay, who faithfully served and protected the citizens of Ontario. Remembering him allows us to honour his courageous and selfless commitment to policing,” said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.

Since 2002, Ontario has permitted bridges and other highway structures to be dedicated in memory of fallen police officers.

Seventy-five provincial highway structures have been dedicated to fallen police officers.
