To the editor:

To those blaming the firefighters, please do your research and understand the process before passing judgment.

As tragic as this story is, and make no doubt it was not only for the family who lost their beloved pet but also for the first responders who had witnessed this. Firefighters can only perform tasks that they are trained for and that the town, township, or municipality has authorized them to perform.

The level of service that a fire department can perform is mandated for them. Local council can decide to have a more robust water rescue program, but then must provide the resources in the way of funding, training, equipment, and ongoing support to the fire department.

The citizens, aka taxpayers, need to discuss these needs with their elected officials and work together for positive changes. These calls happen many times over the winter months and unfortunately not many will have a happy ending.

These dedicated volunteers will readily accept more duties and the responsibilities that come along with it if they are properly trained, outfitted, and supported by the community that they protect.
